Find the Source of the Leak First
A kitchen faucet can leak from several places: the spout, the base, the handle, or the supply connections. Before replacing parts, identify where the water is coming from so you repair the right component.
Common Kitchen Faucet Leaks
Leaking Spout
If water drips from the spout after the faucet is closed, the cartridge, O-rings, or valve seat may be worn. In a single-handle faucet, replacing the cartridge often solves the problem. In a two-handle faucet, check the washer and valve seat under the leaking handle.
Leaking Base
Water around the base usually means an O-ring or seal under the spout has failed. Remove the spout carefully and replace the worn seals.
Leaking Handle
Water around the handle often points to a damaged cartridge seal or a loose packing nut. Tighten the nut lightly first. If the leak continues, replace the cartridge or the sealing washer.
Leaking Supply Connections
Water under the sink may come from loose or damaged supply lines. Tighten the connection gently or replace the supply line if it is cracked or corroded.

General Repair Steps
- Turn off the hot and cold water supply valves.
- Open the faucet to release remaining water pressure.
- Remove the handle and access the cartridge or valve.
- Replace the worn cartridge, O-ring, or washer with the correct part.
- Reassemble the faucet carefully and avoid overtightening.
- Turn the water back on and test for leaks.
When to Replace Instead of Repair
If the faucet is heavily corroded, the body is cracked, or replacement parts are no longer available, installing a new faucet is usually more cost-effective than repeated repairs.
