What Is Brass?
Brass is an alloy made mainly of copper and zinc. It is valued for its machinability, strength, corrosion resistance, and warm golden appearance. These properties make brass one of the most common materials for quality kitchen and bathroom faucets.
Preparing the Brass Alloy
Faucet production begins with copper and zinc that are melted and combined in controlled proportions. The alloy composition affects the faucet’s strength, casting behavior, and lead content. Modern faucets for many export markets use low-lead or lead-free brass.
Casting the Faucet Body
The molten brass is poured or injected into molds to create the rough faucet body. Gravity casting and low-pressure casting are common methods. After cooling, the casting is removed from the mold and prepared for machining.
Machining and Drilling
The cast body is machined to create smooth surfaces, precise holes, and the internal water passages. This step is important because it affects how the cartridge, spout, and handles fit together.
Grinding and Polishing
The faucet body is ground and polished to remove casting marks and create a smooth surface. Good surface preparation is essential for a clean, even finish.
Surface Plating or Coating
After polishing, the faucet may be plated with nickel and chrome or finished with another coating such as brushed nickel, matte black, or PVD. Multi-layer plating improves corrosion resistance and appearance.
Assembly and Quality Testing
The faucet is assembled with the cartridge, aerator, hoses, and handles. Finished products are tested for leaks, water pressure, handle operation, and surface quality before packaging.
