If Your Water Is Soft, Why Does Your Faucet Aerator Still Clog?

TL;DR: If you live in a soft-water city and your aerator still clogs every few months, it is almost certainly not limescale — so soaking it in vinegar won’t fix the cause. What you’re pulling out is sediment shed by your own building’s pipes: rust flakes from galvanised risers, copper corrosion product, or fine grit stirred up whenever the supply is shut off and turned back on. Look at the colour of the debris. White and crusty means scale. Orange, brown, black or gritty means pipes. The second one keeps coming back until you add a screen upstream of the faucet.

Almost every article about a clogged faucet aerator gives you the same answer: it’s limescale, unscrew it, soak it in white vinegar overnight, done. That advice is fine — if you actually live somewhere with hard water. Plenty of people don’t, and they follow the vinegar routine anyway, get a couple of clean months, and then watch the flow drop off again. The vinegar wasn’t wrong. The diagnosis was.

This guide is about the other cause: the one where your water is soft, there’s no white crust anywhere, and the aerator screen still packs solid. It’s a common situation in coastal and subtropical cities with reservoir-fed supplies, and it needs a completely different fix.

First: Is Your Water Actually Hard?

Water hardness is measured as calcium carbonate concentration, in milligrams per litre. The rough scale:

  • Under 60 mg/L — soft
  • 60–120 mg/L — moderately hard
  • 120–180 mg/L — hard
  • Over 180 mg/L — very hard

Most utilities publish this figure. It’s worth actually looking it up before you buy a descaler, because the results surprise people. Hong Kong is a good example — a dense, humid, coastal city where you’d assume mineral buildup is the enemy. Its Water Supplies Department reports total hardness averaging around 36–40 mg/L, with readings ranging from under 5 up to about 69. That is soft water by any standard, comfortably below the 60 mg/L line.

So when a faucet in a Hong Kong flat loses pressure at the spout, limescale is the wrong first guess. Same goes for Seattle, Portland, Boston and a long list of other soft-supply cities.

What’s Actually in the Screen

Pull the aerator out and look at it in good light before you clean anything. The debris tells you where it came from.

  • White, chalky, crusty, hard to scrape — that’s mineral scale. Vinegar is the right answer, and you have harder water than you thought.
  • Orange or rust-brown flakes — iron oxide, shed from galvanised steel pipe. Common in buildings from the era before copper and plastic took over.
  • Blue-green or turquoise specks — copper corrosion product, from copper pipework.
  • Black rubbery fragments — a deteriorating washer, supply hose liner, or water heater dip tube. This one is worth chasing down; it means a component upstream is breaking apart.
  • Fine grey grit or sand — mains sediment, usually after supply work in your street or building.

Only the first of those is a water chemistry problem. The rest are a plumbing problem, which is why they come back.

Why Soft Water Can Be Harder on Pipes, Not Easier

Here’s the part that feels backwards. Hard water deposits a thin mineral film on the inside of pipes. It’s a nuisance in kettles and shower heads, but that same film also acts as a barrier between the water and the metal.

Soft water has little to deposit, so that protective layer never really forms — and water low in dissolved minerals also tends to be less chemically buffered, which makes it somewhat more aggressive toward the metal it’s sitting against. In an old riser, that means the pipe wall keeps shedding corrosion product into the supply instead of sealing itself over. The particles travel until something catches them, and the finest filter in the whole system is the little mesh disc in your faucet.

Your aerator, in other words, is doing its job. It’s the last screen before the water hits your hands, and in an old building it’s catching everything the pipes upstream let go of.

What Installers Find in Practice

This is easier to see during a renovation than during normal use, because that’s when someone actually opens up the wall.

We supply faucets to trades in a number of markets, including Hong Kong, where the housing stock is unusually stratified — towers finished last year sit next door to buildings from the 1970s still running their original risers. One of the renovation practices we work with there, acdesign.com.hk, makes the same observation on older flats: when they strip out existing fittings, the aerator screens they pull are typically packed with rust-coloured particulate rather than white scale, and the flow complaint the client called about clears up as soon as the sediment is dealt with — not because anything was descaled. In newly handed-over towers on the same water supply, the screens come out clean.

Same water, same city, opposite results. The variable isn’t the water. It’s what the water travelled through to reach the tap.

The Fixes, In Order of How Long They Last

1. Clean the aerator (buys you months, not years)

Unscrew it — most spouts use a 15/16″-27 male or 55/64″-27 female thread — keep the parts in order as they come out, and rinse the screen backwards under a strong stream so the debris exits the way it came in. For sediment, rinsing works better than soaking. Save the vinegar for actual scale.

2. Switch to a coarser or dual-screen aerator

A very fine mesh clogs faster in a sediment-heavy supply. A slightly coarser screen, or a laminar-flow insert instead of an aerated one, will run longer between cleanings. You give up a little of the soft, bubbly stream; you stop cleaning it every eight weeks.

3. Put a filter upstream — the actual fix

A sediment filter on the branch feeding the fixture, or an inline screen at the angle stop, catches particulate before it reaches the faucet cartridge. This matters for more than flow rate: grit is abrasive, and a ceramic cartridge that’s been grinding against sand will start to weep long before its rated life. In a building with old risers this is the difference between cleaning aerators forever and simply not having the problem.

4. Flush after any supply interruption

Whenever water is shut off and restored — building maintenance, a burst main, work on your floor — the pressure change dislodges whatever was sitting in the pipes. Before you use the fixture normally, pull the aerator off and run the spout wide open for a minute so the slug of debris exits through an open spout instead of loading up the screen.

While You’re In There: Humidity and Finish

One more thing worth knowing if you’re in a humid coastal climate, because it’s the other question we get constantly. Hong Kong sits near 80% relative humidity for much of the year, and salt-laden coastal air adds to the load. In that environment the finish on a faucet is doing real work, not just looking good.

Practical notes: polished chrome shows every water spot and every fingerprint, so in a humid bathroom it looks dirty faster even though nothing is actually wrong with it. Brushed and matte finishes hide spotting far better day to day. PVD-coated finishes — brushed gold, brushed nickel, gunmetal — are considerably more durable in humid air than electroplated equivalents, which is worth confirming with the manufacturer before you buy, since both get described with the same words in listings. And whatever you fit, keep abrasive cleaners and anything chlorine-based away from it; those do more damage to a finish in one wipe than a year of humidity.

Quick Reference

  • White crust → hard water → vinegar soak, and consider a softener.
  • Coloured or gritty debris → pipe sediment → rinse the screen, fit an upstream filter, flush after any supply shutdown.
  • Black rubber fragments → a component upstream is failing → find it before it fails completely.
  • Clogging again within weeks → it was never scale.

The short version: check your utility’s hardness figure before you buy anything. If the number is under 60 and your aerator keeps blocking, no amount of descaling will help, because there’s nothing to descale. Put a screen between your pipes and your faucet instead.
