Types of Bathroom Sink Drains
Pop-Up Rod Drain
A pop-up rod drain uses a lift rod behind or on the faucet to raise and lower the stopper. The rod connects to a linkage assembly under the sink, and pulling up on the lift rod closes the drain cover.
Press-and-Seal Drain
Press-and-seal drains are opened and closed by simply pressing the drain cover. They are easy to install because there is no linkage under the counter.
Lift-and-Turn Drain
A lift-and-turn drain uses a small knob on the drain cover. Turn or lift the knob to open or close the drain. Like press-and-seal drains, these are simpler to install and do not require under-counter linkage.

How to Choose the Right Drain
Measure the Sink Opening
Bathroom sink drain openings are commonly 1 1/4 inches, but 1 1/2-inch and 1 5/8-inch sizes are also used. Measure the opening or check the sink manufacturer’s instructions before ordering.
Match the Drain to the Sink Style
Choose a finish and design that works with the faucet and sink. The drain is a visible part of the finished bathroom, so the finish should match the faucet and other fittings.
Confirm the Pop-Up Mechanism
If you prefer easy operation, a press-and-seal or lift-and-turn drain is usually simpler to install and maintain. A pop-up rod drain offers a classic look but requires proper adjustment under the sink.
Basic Installation Steps
- Turn off the water supply and remove the old drain if replacing one.
- Clean the sink opening and apply plumber’s putty or the included gasket around the new drain flange.
- Insert the drain body into the sink opening from above.
- From under the sink, install the rubber washer, friction washer, and lock nut, then tighten carefully.
- If using a pop-up rod, connect and adjust the linkage so the stopper opens and closes correctly.
- Run water and check for leaks around the drain and P-trap.
