Why Does Water Drip From a Shower Head After It Is Turned Off?

Residual Water Is Usually Normal

After you turn off a shower, a small amount of water may continue to drip or flow from the shower head or hose for a short time. In most cases this is not a leak or a product defect. It is simply water that remains inside the overhead spray, shower arm, or hose after the valve closes.

Modern shower heads often have a large spray face and internal channels. Once the water supply stops, the water trapped in those channels needs somewhere to go. It may drain slowly for a few seconds or release after a short delay when the air pressure inside the shower head changes. This is especially common with overhead rain showers and hand showers connected by a long hose.

When Residual Flow Is Normal

• The dripping lasts only a short time and then stops.
• It happens after using a large overhead shower or hand shower.
• There is no constant drip when the shower is fully off and dry.
• The water does not continue all day or increase over time.

When It May Be a Real Leak

A constant, ongoing drip or a stream that never stops usually points to a worn cartridge, valve seat, O-ring, or hose connection. You should also check for water leaking from the wall connection, the hose nut, or the shower arm threads.

How to Check the Shower Head

• Turn the shower off completely and dry the outside of the shower head.
• Watch the spray face for a continuous drip over several minutes.
• Check whether water appears around the hose connection or wall outlet rather than the spray face.
• Run the shower and look for drips from the body or joints while water is flowing.

Common Fixes

• Clean or replace the O-ring or rubber washer inside the shower head connection.
• Tighten the shower head, hose nut, or wall elbow, but avoid overtightening.
• If the shower head has a swivel ball joint, inspect and replace the seal if it is cracked or hard.
• If the shower continues to leak when fully off, the cartridge or valve may need service.

Choosing a Shower Head That Drains Cleanly
