Faucet Production Process: Casting, Machining, Plating, and Assembly

How a Faucet Is Produced

A quality faucet goes through several stages before it reaches the customer. Understanding the production process helps buyers evaluate factory capability and ask the right questions when sourcing OEM/ODM products.

1. Casting

Casting forms the basic faucet body from molten metal. Two common methods are used in faucet manufacturing.

Metal Mold Casting

Metal mold casting, also called permanent mold casting, pours liquid metal into reusable metal molds. It can produce consistent shapes at volume, but very thick or complex parts may be limited.

Sand Casting

Sand casting uses sand as the mold material. It is flexible and cost-effective for certain shapes, especially when the design is complex or the production run is smaller. The mold is made from sand and then broken away after casting.

2. Machining

After casting, the rough body is machined to create accurate dimensions, flat sealing surfaces, and internal waterways. Precision machining affects how well the cartridge and other components fit.

3. Grinding and Polishing

The surface is ground and polished to remove casting marks and prepare it for finishing. A smooth, defect-free surface is critical for a durable, attractive final finish.

4. Plating or Coating

The polished faucet is plated or coated. Chrome, nickel, matte black, brushed nickel, and PVD are common finishes. Multi-layer electroplating provides better corrosion resistance and long-term appearance.

5. Assembly

Workers or automated lines install the cartridge, aerator, spout, handles, hoses, and mounting hardware. The assembly process must be controlled to prevent leaks and handle problems.

6. Testing and Inspection

Finished faucets are tested for water pressure, leakage, handle torque, surface quality, and packaging. Batch inspection helps maintain consistent quality across production.
